Kitty Delights: Awesome Treats for Your Furry Friend

August 1st 2015

At Essex, we love all members of our community, including our Essex pet pals. That's why Essex is a pet-friendly apartment community. Today we wanted to share three healthy and flavorful feline treats that you can make for your kitty.

1. Cheese Treats – With 1/4 cup cornmeal, 1/4 cup Greek yogurt, 5 tablespoons of parmesan, and 3/4 cup each of cheddar cheese and white flour, you can make homemade cheese treats for your cat. Combine all ingredients and stir together to make a biscuit dough. Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thick. Cut into pieces (or use your favorite cookie cutter to make fun shaped cat treats), place on a cookie sheet, and bake for 25 minutes at 350 degrees.

2. Tuna Treats – Take one 6-oz. can of tuna, 2/3 cup of tuna water, 1/2 cup flour, 1/4 cup of cornmeal and one egg white (cooked) and combine to form a dough. Roll out these ingredients to 1/4 inch thick with your rolling pin, and cut into 1-inch squares. Bake the tuna treats for 20 minutes at 350 degrees.

3. Catnip Treats – Mix 1-1/2 cups whole wheat flour, 1/3 cup milk powder and 1-1/2 tsp catnip. Add to this 1/2 cup milk, 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil and 1 large egg; stir to create a sort of cookie dough. Roll to 1/8 inch thick, adding more flour if the dough begins to stick. Cut into shapes with a cookie cutter and bake for 20 minutes at 350 degrees.

These are just a few treats we love to make for our furry friends. Since cats can be finicky, it's all right to get creative and swap out one of the ingredients for your cat's favorite snack. It's always a good idea to check with your pet's veterinarian to make sure these recipes accommodate your pet's dietary needs. Additionally, these are meant to be kitty treats and not a replacement for meals.
