Treat Your Best Friend to Some Home Cooking with These Gourmet Dog Biscuit Recipes

Everyone loves home-cooked treats. After all, which would you rather have: store-bought cookies straight from the box, or homemade cookies straight from the oven?   

I know, it’s a silly question. Just about everybody prefers home cooking. And not many would argue that home-cooked food isn't better for you than prepackaged, mass-manufactured store-bought food.

The same is true for your dog. After all, dogs are just like people in so many ways. Don't you think your dog would prefer a tasty treat straight from the oven instead of from a box?

What About Your Dog?

We know that many Essex residents are dog owners. That's because Essex apartment communities are so pet friendly. So we thought we'd provide a few recipes for homemade gourmet dog biscuits—one savory and one a little bit sweet.

Ready to whip up a tasty, healthy, homemade treat for your best friend? These treats are sure to pass the tail-wag test with flying colors!


'Baby Your Baby' Biscuits

Here's a wonderful recipe based on baby food (could anything be safer?) Be sure to add some variety to your dog's diet each time you whip up a batch of these gourmet biscuits by selecting different baby foods.

Here's what you'll need:

  • 3/4 cup of rolled oats
  • 2 cups of whole wheat flour
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup of powdered milk
  • 1/4 cup of water
  • 5 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 2 jars of strained baby food (choose any flavor you want.)

Note: Some foods that are perfectly fine for humans are dangerous for dogs; avoid using baby foods with any of the following ingredients:

  • Onions/garlic
  • Raisins/grapes
  • Dairy products
  • Peaches/plums/persimmons
  • Avocados
  • Chocolate

Here's what you'll do:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
  • Combine all ingredients in a large bowl to make a thick dough
  • Place dough on lightly floured rolling board or countertop
  • Knead until the dough is smooth—about 4 minutes
  • Roll the dough to a thickness of about ½” (sprinkling a bit of flour on the dough can make rolling easier)
  • Cut out individual biscuits using cookie cutters or a glass
  • Place biscuits on an ungreased cookie sheet, bake for about 22 minutes
  • Cool to room temperature before serving

Peanut-Buttery Graham-Crackery Biscuits

What dog doesn't love peanut butter? Add the subtle sweetness of graham crackers, and these gourmet biscuits will be a surefire chops-licking, tail-wagging hit with your best friend.

Here's what you'll need:

  • 1/8 cup of oil
  • 1/2 cup of peanut butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 1 cup of graham cracker crumbs
  • 1/4 cup of wheat germ
  • 1/4 cup of cracked wheat
  • 1/4 cup of natural bran
  • 1/2 cup of oats
  • 2 cups of whole wheat flour

Here's what you'll do:

  • Preheat oven to 300 degrees F
  • Combine all the ingredients except the flour, mixing well (using mixer with dough hook will be easiest)
  • Mix until the dough is stiff enough to handle easily, then form the dough into small balls
  • Place dough balls onto large cookie sheet
  • Flatten slightly (use your fingers or the bottom of a glass)
  • Bake on top rack for 90 minutes, turning biscuits after 45 minutes
  • Lower temperature to 225 F and bake for another 45 minutes
  • Biscuits are done when they are hard and break apart cleanly when cool (like Milk Bone dog biscuits)
